  • Favorite Emperor: Antoninus Pius because he has a cool name.
  • Favorite praenomen, nomen, or cognomen?  Gaius because it's abbreviated as C. and that just doesn't make sense.
  • Caesar or Vergil, and why?   Vergil because fiction. But don't get me wrong, the events of the Aeneid did actually happen.
  • The Odyssey, the Iliad, or the Aeneid? Why?  The Iliad because fighting.
  • Favorite Certamen question?  Definitely not the time I answered "ablative of agent" on a question asking what type of dative was present in a sentence.
  • Which classical garment would you actually wear? Tunica - tis a real classic.

  • Favorite JCL memory: My favorite JCL memory is during a dinner at Nationals. The entire California delegation sat together and began to chant spirit cheers. Eventually the entire cafeteria erupted into a spirit battle between the different delegations. This moment embodies the JCLove and every time I remember this moment, I fall in love with Latin even more.

  • Favorite Song: Scars to your Beautiful by Alessia Cara

  • Favorite TV Show: The Newsroom
  • Favorite JCL memory: Going on a roller coaster at Knotts Berry Farm after the 2014 State Convention at University High, or playing cards (slapjack, poker, speed) with Certamen opponents from Loyola and Harvard Westlake. We spent at least 2 hours on that table, laughing and playing cards while bonding. I also saw my friend who I hadn't seen since club swim there.
  • Favorite Quote: "You are too concerned with what was and what will be. There's a saying: "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the "present"." - Oogway
  • Favorite Emperor: Augustus
  • Favorite Certamen Question?  This was from State Convention at St. Ignatius. "From which college does this motto originate?" Vox-*bzzz My friend answered at the speed of sound and shouted: “Dartmouth!” He not only got this toss-up, but got the bonus immediately as well. “From what college does this motto originate?” Crescat- UCHICAGO!
  • The Odyssey, the Iliad, or the Aeneid? Why?  The Odyssey. In Ninth grade we had to read it for English, and we started the book late in the year. The teacher has a tradition where any English student is invited to come and complete the book by having a sort of sleepover in the library. There was Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles, very comfortable beanbags, and my Latin teacher was there dressed in his Hermes costume.
  • Which classical garment would you actually wear? Laurel Wreath!
  • Grumio or Quintus?   Grumio. That beautiful and wonderous beard is now only a memory, but his legacy lives on, in the ever famous quote: "ancilla Grumionem delectat".
  • Pompeii or Herculanneum?  Pompeii! That way, if I get set back in time for whatever reason, the Doctor can save me!

Nuntius Editor: Peter Bota

  • School: University High School

  • Grade: 12
  • Officer email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  • Favorite Song: Tolkien’s “Lament for Boromir”. While Tolkien never performed it, he wrote the lyrics and there are many beautiful interpretations of it. Really, just about all of Tolkien’s songs, from “Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold” to “The Song of Durin”. Probably because they are the only songs that my stunted vocal range can sing (Plus, there are no notes, so I can’t be off-key).
  • Favorite JCL memory: Chilling with the rest of my certamen team after the last match. We just talked, joked, and laughed wayyyy too much, staying up until the early morning, both at convention and continuing at the hotel. It usually helps that I am hyped out of my mind on a potent, a not altogether healthy, mix of adrenaline and caffeine.
  • Favorite Quote: “All the things I really like to do are either immoral, illegal, or fattening.” -Alexander Woollcott
  • Favorite Emperor?  Marcus Aurelius. The great Stoic, who could overcome all emotion and even save his empire from decline by his inner peace. But, in the end, he was brought low and failed the empire because he was unable to overcome his loyalty to family in the end. Now you, young epicureans can come over to the Stoic side and maybe you too may find the way to use the Stoic side to preserve the civilizations you love (Star Wars Reference intentional).
  • Which classical garment would you actually wear?  Lorica Musculata. Easy to clean, looks utterly awesome, and the easiest way to a six pack ever invented.
  • Grumio or Quintus?   Quintus all the way! I mean who wouldn’t choose the sexy, cultured, wine-loving hero who essentially stands against an entire province for the cause of what’s right over what is essentially a comic relief character. Quintus is a hero, Grumio is just Grumio. May the ashes rest lightly over his beard, though. The right man still died under Vesuvius.
